You're right on both counts. Interesting that Kinsella chose that name for
his character, given his name. Too bad that will couldn't get a response
from him on the subject.

I don't think that W(illiam) P(atrick) Kinsella is a pen name-- it's never
been mentioned as such, and it is a fairly common Irish surname. And since
my old Granny was a Kinsella from County Wexford, I know a little bit about
it. (You can't go two feet in Wexford without running into a Kinsella or
twelve.) From the Gaelic ceinn sealaigh, Kinsella means black crown, or
black headed.

I'm thinking that Salinger didn't just pick names from the air and use
them-- so many of them have some sort of meaning, e.g., See-more Glass, etc.
  So our Black Headed Ray... hmmm. I never considered it before. I think
I'll have to take another look at that fine story.
