Seduced back to The Laughing Man after forty years
by Paul's Parallels I find myself once again feeling as
bewildered as the narrator (as, no doubt, I'm meant to
feel) - by what the hell is actually going on between
Mary & the Chief.
Who's dumping who? And why? Is it a straightfoward
dump or an abortion? Or what? And what's all this
with the opened & rebuttoned overcoat & the brief visit
of 'hands' to 'hip pockets' - BOTH hands? It doesn't
strike me as any recognisably tell-tale gesture.
Cripes, I feel thick. Thick & irritated (not intrigued)
as I am by Teddy & all the other knowing ambiguities
of the Master.
Scottie B.
