Salinger's storiies can certainly be read and enjoyed this way. I think the
question is, did Salinger put deeper layers into his stories to be mined out
by those so inclined? In the Laughing Man story, for instance, did he allude
to A Tale of Two Cities, did he throw enough baby carriages at us to let us
assume a pregnancy? This is fun stuff, for some, to ponder and keeps a
Salinger list going.
