Thanks for the above. It never occurred to me about the initials! Or the
date snafu. Last night I looked at the story and paused at the line:

"It took me almost as long to select a pseudonym as it had taken me to write
the whole letter."

And that mixup with the dates seems really odd, given that the first few
pages of the story abounds with dates; and that one feels Salinger must be
intent on locating the story to Canada and 1940.
