I have almost finished "Here But Not Here", Lillian Ross's memoir about her
forty-year relationship with William Shawn, the legendary editor of "The New
Yorker", and dedicatee of "Franny and Zooey".

"In the 1950s, Bill introduced me to Salinger, and the three of us would
have dinner together when he came down from his home in New Hampshire. He
was always charming, funny, open, direct, and seemingly simple. Of all the
scores of writers Bill dealt with over the years, including some who were
old friends, only Salinger would go out of his way to be helpful to Bill
without asking anything in return."
