 Hi John,

Yep, I too was suspecting he came from humble beginnings, but the tone of the text seemed to fit in his mouth... I thought bio 25 could be my dear master Henri de Montherlant, but I read he came from Catalan. How many other tries can I have before disqualification ???

Hi Valerie,

Sorry about the insomnia. No, I'm afraid St. Genet came from much humbler beginnings. Born to an addicted mother who did not want him (her name, I believe, was Gabrielle) and an unknown father, he was defined early in his life, according to his biographer Sartre, when his mother named him with an accusation: "thief."

But I love Genet, as well as the much more aristocratic Frenchman who wrote the autobiographical remarks I cited in # 25.

Good night,

--John
