I decided to become a big-time syndicated cartoonist. I spent years
developing the necessary skills, but then found myself interested in things
that weren't necessarily compatible with this goal. I decided to follow my
new interests and shlep comics along with me. It's as if I had become a
cowboy and later decided to become an opera star. I'd sing arias while
swinging a lariat."

Obligatory Salinger Reference:
Regarding Holden's madman days involved his mothering people but not
getting much mothering himself, this autobio is of a guy whose mother
killed herself (when he was in college). I wonder how absent Holden's
mother was. Distracted by depression? It makes me wonder what happens later
on in the story of the Caulfield family. :-(
