"Old and lame" only because I've heard all this cheapness so many times before and because it reveals such a limited amount of reading and a limited amount of care or respect for the serious texts in question.

So when you say that "The only thing I ever encounter that might remotely be termed American lit crit is on Bananafish, Austen-L & Heming-L.," you instantly begin a different discussion, one which doesn't really interest me.

There have always been simplistic and/or shoddy critics and careful and responsible critics. There have always been intellectually lazy scholars and disciplined, rigorous thinkers, no matter the "type" of criticism being practiced or the critical influences being cited. Such an observation is neither particularly useful nor historically unique.
