some additional info (it all comes from ben yagoda's
history of the new yorker: 'about town', unless
ohterwise noted.)

'the fisherman' submitted to the new yorker in march
'41--rejected. (alexander, p.69)

'lunch for three' submitted to the new yorker in '41
(first reader john mosher commmented 'there is
certainly something quite brisk and bright about this
piece, but it hardly seems just the right thing to us
at the moment.') rejected.

'monologue for a watery highball' submitted to the new
yorker in '41--rejected.

'i went to school with adolf hitler' submitted to the
new yorker in '41--rejected.

'a summer accident' submitted to the new yorker and
rejected. date unknown, but would guess c.49 as
yogoda writes 'afer a story salinger was particularly
fond of, 'a summer accident', was turned down, he put
the genre aside for a while. he told lobrano that he
had rented a small house in westport and started work
on 'the novel about the prep school boy'.'

'the boy in the people shooting hat' submitted to the
new yorker and rejected. date unknown. lobrano's
rejection letter is reproduced in yogoda's book (alas,
not dated!), and the letter says '...passages that are
brilliant and moving and effective, but we feel that
on the whole it's pretty shocking for a magazine like
ours.' story has a fight between the central character
(named bobby) with stradlater (who is handsome and has
sexual experience) over bobby's feelings for june
gallagher. since this is recycled in catcher, and
since lobrano genuinely sounds 'distress[ed] at having
to send it back' ('we have a real interest in jerry'),
i'd guess it dates from c.48/49.
