Well, this afternoon I finally gave in to the thought that I will never find my copy of Raise High The Roof Beam/Seymour and need to purchase a new copy. During the past few days a few things surprised me: No luck finding Salinger books in the used stores anymore. That might be good in that everyone keeps theirs, or bad in that the schools aren't using Salinger in their curriculums. Secondly, the covers of the Salinger books are completely empty of anything. I suppose it has been some time since I have bought Salinger new, and these might have been around for awhile, but what an awful thing Time-Warner has done to the Salinger books. None of them portray any personality whatsoever. Finally, I found it nice, as well as odd, that I bought one of my favorite author's works new for less than the price of a terribly cliche movie. What does that say about our society as readers? <rhetorical> Of course this is preaching to the converted :} Oh yeah...and lest I forget, one of the neatest intros to a book: "If there is an amateur reader still left in the world - or anybody who just reads and runs - I ask him or her, with untellable affection and gratitude, to split the dedication of this book four ways with my wife and children." Not only does he make me feel welcome as an "amateur reader" but his -way- of dedicating the book to his family is just so, well, J.D. Salinger :} -bob ------------------------------------------------------- "though we've talked and talked and talked, we've all agreed not to say a word." http://miso.wwa.com/~anaconda/cure2.html -------------------------------------------------------
