Now, here's an interesting thought that came up in conversation. I was explaining the storyline of For Esme to a guy the other day (whose actually a film critic) - he'd just seen Saving Private Ryan and I was talking about to what extent Salinger is a postwar writer - i.e. girl gives father's watch to wistful sergeant and knows he'll take care of it' ... and he said `Oh! Just like Pulp Fiction' (And yes people who hated previous Tarantino and Salinger strand - I didn't call this post Tarantino and Salinger so I could get you this far (: ) It's quite obvious when you think about it. The middle story of Pulp Fiction is a humourous inversion of For Esme. I think it'd be quite interesting to have a think about where else Tarantino may have been influenced by Salinger - after all we've found two examples already.
