I'm going to check out the book today if I can [if it is out!]
but there is probably more on the filing system there. My
assumption has always been that Salinger feels writing to be
important and publishing to be phony and the praise heaped on
him an insult to his ego, and probably hinder his progress made
in this karmic manifestation.

I believe that publishing posthumously and avoiding contact with
fans and publishers allows him to write without receiving praise
for it, and therefore to write more honestly. Salinger is a
perfectionist when it comes to these matters, so I don't think
its
"giving him too much credit." I'm giving him as much credit, I
should think, as JD Salinger deserves.

So its my assumption that his stories will be published post
humously. It makes perfect sense now. I wonder why he would write
if not for others to read them, eventually.
