I had the same exact experience yesterday in a poetry class.
People who had prepared what they would say at the informal
introduction circles days in advance. People who would pick apart
to death the first poem handed out to them in order to prove what
they knew about poetry...people referring to the Wasteland as
"The Fisher King."

I bailed, to be honest. It was a group of people 20+ years older
than me and as soon as someone says "Poetry Workshop" I get
nervous. I haven't been able to stand for a single class but
that's
what I get for dabbling with the ivy league. In my opinion, the
absolute best classes for writing that I have ever had have been
religious classes- a class of Islamic Mysticism, Buddhism,
etc., if they take an "experiential" approach- that is, concern
themselves with the ideas of the religion instead of who wrote
what book and what so and so thought of so and so and there's
some things that work out beautifully, even if you are not into
religion, the poetry and the stories you get there will be
very educational as a writer. That's the best advice I could
give,
but its just from personal experience is all. I dropped my
poetry class immediately and will probably sign up for a class on
Judaism.....
