Matt's post made me wonder why this literate, well-schooled English
Professor, still thinks Salinger's fiction is the best he's read...I
think it's because I know it so well and because this list helps me
constantly see it differently. In my life, Salinger just edges out
Balzac, but the point is that I don't agree with the trend to color
Salinger readers as those who have not grown up and lurk in
adolescence by worshipping Salinger. I do think such readers
indicate an interesting effect of the fiction, but the real case I
would make (after my own personal admission of following my own
reading bliss) is that the craft of narration in Catcher and the
poetic concentration of worlds in his short stories make J.D.
Salinger one of our best and finest fiction writers. I don't think
my personal favorite is everyone's, but I do think MATT that you know
the qualities of Salinger's fiction too well to write them off...will
