I think it was Warren French who said of this story that it contains
the best letter home from camp "from man or boy" -- prefiguring, by
many years, the content of "Hapworth," and eerily echoing it, though
in a much less "sophisticated" tone. It also dwells on issues of
self-destruction and suicide and is, overall, a terribly haunting
story.
