I confess that this "don't understand the why" quote made me do a
triple-take.  Did I miss something, or aren't we Americans about the
most violent creatures around, all things considered?  We make piranhas 
look gentle.  We may no longer practice genocide as a national pastime, 
but I would nearly swear -- based on newspapers I read and on my own 
veducation -- that we all but offer high school courses on Introduction 
to Practical Brutality....
Am I mistaken?  
(If you disagree, I only ask that you not try to take my head off 
as part of your disagreement or because of my observations; don't prove 
me correct by taking out your irritation on my all-too-mortal flesh.  
Feel free to argue me out of this belief; I don't mind being wrong 
if it's based on reality.)
