In this week's New Yorker, which came out yesterday, there's an
interesting essay by Louis Menand about Holden's fiftieth anniversary
(if a bit belated). It can be seen at the following URL:

One thing he asserts is that behind Franny's spiritual crisis in
"Franny" is that she's definitely pregnant "by a man who she realizes
will remain, all his life, a pompous English major" -- no ambiguity in
Menand's mind.

He also asserts that "Zooey" remains the longest fiction ever
published in the New Yorker. (I always thought "Hapworth" was the
longest, but frankly, I've never done a word count.)

There are a few engaging points, and parallels he makes with other
writers who, he asserts, are engaged in "rewrites" of Catcher.

I'd be curious to hear from other subscribers who have a chance to
read the article....
