according to ben yagoda's 'about town', salinger in
1941 had seven stories rejected by the new yorker. he
tells the titles of 3 i've never heard of: 'lunch for
three', 'monologue for a watery highball' and 'i went
to school with adolf hitler' (i kid you not). 2 other
titles (years not mentioned): 'a summer accident' and
'the boy in the people shooting hat'.

in 1942 and 1943 an unspecified number of rejections
including another holden caulfield story.

all of his 1944 submissions rejected (number not
specified); all 1945 stories plus 15 poems that year
rejected. all 1946 stories rejected (no. not
specified). in jan of 1947 first bananafish story
generates interest; lacks first section; finally 2nd
revision is accepted for jan 1948 pub.

yet even after this breakthrough 3 more stories
rejected in '48 and 7 are rejected in '49.
