Yes ... that was in a Philip Roth novel from the early 1960s, though I
can't remember which novel it was.

The sly and wickedly funny part is that in Roth, Franny and Lane are
anything but the type to sit with their glasses of wine. They are
poisonous toward each other, the kind of couple to bicker in public and
make everyone around them very uncomfortable.
It was only a brief scene, but was memorable (except that, of course, I
can't recall the title of the novel!).
