Excellent question. It's a long time since I read `Salinger: A Critical And
Personal Portrait' but I vaguely remember something about Whit Burnett
lending him money. And with his war troubles, wouldn't the goverment have
given him some sort of pension or something?

If anyone else knows I'd love to know too!
