Thanks for the fantastic post, SD--I had never thought to work through
this (Salinger's marriage situation coming to bear on his fiction) before.
This is definitely somtehing to pay a good deal of attention to,
particularly since we readers have been very good about dragging the
pre/proto Glass/Catcher stories around in Salinger's personal life of the
40's. "Salinger's personal life" post 1948 became for me merely his
increasing interest in various Eastern mysticisms--but it makes perfect
sense that that personal life is at least as dominated by
realtionships/marriages as spiritual concerns...
