Steve said, in response to my suggestion that the drinking age is a joke and
widely treated like one:
<< in certain circumstances, that may be true, but the government certainly
does not view it that way. In NY any person who is under 21 and is
operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol loses their
license. . .heavy fines are consistantly levied against adults
whose children have parties involving alcohol. . .people who choose not to
drink in high school, are not neccesarily scouts for the man. . . >>

You speak only truth. I think you misconstrued my meaning, though. It was
an exaggeration, obviously, to suggest that the only non-drinking high
school students are -- well, dorks. My point was to inform our critic of
all things American that, despite the law, it is regular and even widely
acknowledged that American youth often first encounter alcohol at some point
or another in high school, and that alcohol is, like it or not, a
significant aspect of the culture of our colleges.

The figures of authority, of course, cannot officially endorse this sort of
behavior. And punishments are handed out upon capture. But I believe that,
speaking generally, neither the parents nor the police think very much of
busting beer parties. Sure, they'll confiscate the booze and the rascals
will get grounded if they're still living at home. But that's usually about
it. And I suspect that most parents of teenagers figure that their kids
have tried alcohol at some time or another, whether or not they've ever been
caught.

College kids getting ripped on the weekends, of course, surprises no one.
Sure, the cops bust parties that get out of hand and schools even hand out
fines every once in a while. But it's still a very regular occurance,
everybody knows about it, and few people care very much.

Later, Steve said:
<< I think drunk hooking up is a bad idea, for many reasons, probably the
two biggest being that one, its not an intelligent decision, because you
can't think very well, and two, its really not all that fun, compared to
when you are fully aware. >>

Oh come on, people. Lighten up. Sobriety and Love and Marriage all have
their respective places, but surely there is SOMETHING to be said for crazed
irresponsible drunken red-hot monkey love.

Then Scottie said:
<<
I prefer my sex darker, anarchic, obsessive, forbidden.
    MUCH more enjoyable.
>>

Again, the voice of reason.
