Raise High

It's been about 9 months, I think, since I last swam in the fish bowl. I
come in this incarnation an unabashed fan ,might I say devotee, of Raise
High the Roofbeam, Carpenters. I love the old deaf mute uncle with the cigar
and I remember Holden wanting to pretend to be a deaf mute and pump gas. In
Carpenters Buddy reads Seymour's diary while sitting on the side of the bath
tub, in Zooey the reading is done in a bath tub of a letter from Buddy read
by Zooey.

Raise High is full of great scenes and writing. When Buddy is showing the
Matron of honor the phone he passes the deaf mute uncle in the hall:

"His face was in the ferocious repose that had fooled me during most of the
car ride, but as he came closer to us in the hall, the mask reversed itself;
he pantomimed to us both the very highest salutations and greetings, and I
found myself grinning and nodding immoderately in return. His sparse white
hair seemed freshly combed---- almost freshly washed , as though he might
have discovered a tiny barbershop cached away at the other end of the
apartment. When he'd passed us, I felt a compulsion to look back over my
shoulder , and when I did, he waved back to me, vigorously--- a great,
bon-voyage, come-back soon wave. It picked me up no end."

Questions I have:

what is a soupcon?

Is a jump seat in a limo a half seat or what?

What is a clear havana cigar?

"Lead on Macduff" who was macduff?

Why is bananafish so quiet, am I writing off into the void?

I'll be here staring ferociously at the computer screen.

Delighted
