yes, interesting point jim about salinger's books
being re-released. that little, brown has done the
four books in large paperback editions (to compete
with the mass market editions by someone else). in
addition to the fact that all the books are still
available in hardcover via little, brown. i think
it's rather unusal to see hardcover editions of a
living author on the shelf along with the same books
in paperback. even here in my sheltered suburban
barnes & noble one sees the hardbacks. speaking of
being read, i wonder if when 'thc catcher' hit 50 if
any reliable industry numbers were cited regarding
salinger's currrent sales. that would give a
clearer indication of his current popularity. i
vaguely recall in hamilton that he mentions that for
the court case salinger's income was included in the
depositions and hamilton remarked what a modest income
a writer of this stature had. (of course, if jds
wanted to be a sell-out, he could max out by selling
holden to his doom. one hopes that the family won't
do that after his passing.)
