I"m not sure Paul what Salinger's relationship to critics has done to
his writing life. If anyone was ever armed to say screw them, it's
JDS though. I can say that he has probably received enough reader
response to feel deeply encouraged (with or without including
critics) and my guess is that Salinger has always had a difficult
relationship with his readers and with writing and that somewhere
along the line, blaming critics became easy. I'm afraid we won't know
what the effects of criticism were on Salinger until we know what's
in those vaults of his. It's possible that critics helped me become
insulated enough to write even greater fiction, isn't it? will
