Yes, `Uncle Wiggly' was turned into a rather soppy and very unSalingerlike movie called `My Foolish Heart' starring Susan Haywood, in about 1950. They were pretty free with their interpretation of the story, turning it into your average garden variety weepie ... Salinger was so galled by the treatment he vowed never to let anyone adapt any of his stories for the screen again (although I'm told he's an avid collector of movies from that era) - despite the fact he was at one point very eager to go D.B.ing. The only other productions I've heard of is a proposed stage play of Catcher - in which JD himself wanted to play Holden! There was also a radio play of `To Esme' floated, with Lawrence Olivier to play Sergeant X (everybody now - `Isn't it ironic?' (: ) and Elia Kazan (director of `On The Waterfront', `A Streetcar Named Desire' etc) approached Salinger to discuss a movie version. As you can guess, none of these ever eventuated. Check out `My Foolish Heart' - just once, to teach yourself the definition of `Hatchet Job' (: No, really, it's not that bad ... it would have been much better had someone like Vincent Minelli directed instead though (His movie `The Clock' is one of the most Salingeresque pieces of that era, and well worth searching out) Camille verona_beach@geocities.com @ THE ARTS HOLE www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Theater/6442 THE INVERTED FOREST www.angelfire.com/pa/invertedforest
