I think the the guy called Lee back because he realized that he had just
spilled his guts to this guy from work and that probably wasn't the most
prudent thing to do especially since his job was now on the line because
he'd screwed up that big case. I think in the end, Lee felt guilty about
sleeping with Joanie while her husband's whole life was in the toilet.
It's one thing to have an affair with a married woman where the spouse is
just this faceless person who just by his very existence adds
a taboo and therefore sexually exciting component to the affair. It's
quite another to see that spouse's naked vulnerability laid open before
you and you are now in the position of trying to comfort that person and
allay his suspicions about his wife, knowing that they are true.
