above JDS letter was a protest of that "New Yorker Little Mummies"
hatchet-job article Tom Wolfe wrote in the late 60s probably for Esquire.
It above all attacked Shawn & the New Yorker as a museum of writers, and a
dozen or so N.Yer authors wrote letters to some organ of publication
protesting the article. Yagoda quotes a snippet where JDS says something
along the lines that the Wolfe article is just plain wrong and
sub-collegiate.

I think here you are mixing up the JDS rambling essay about _Harold Ross_
after his passing. I too recall it was _REJECTED !!!!!_ by the obtuse
Saturday Review and a copy has never turned up anywhere other than in our
dreams.
