Just adding another voice to the chorus. It just doesn't make any kind of sense to suppose that Franny's troubles came about because she was pregnant, although I believe that was the popular wisdom at the time. (I think there was a story in the NYT noting that mothers kept their daughters from visiting Yale boyfriends in droves just after F&Z came out.) But no -- the "Way of the Pilgrim" stuff, the phone call from Buddy/Zooey that brings Franny serenity -- it just doesn't fit in. As for Updike, I realize his technical competence is great, but I've never been able to get the least bit interested in his characters. pauline
