the true first 'seymour'?

Boston: Little, Brown, 1963. The Publisher's File Copy
& Possibly The Only Known Copy Of The True First
Edition - Probably the earliest know State of the
first edition & possibly the only copy extant bound by
Little Brown, the publisher, as a production sample
prior to the actual production run & bound "correctly"
of course with the dedication page properly inserted.
In a 1968 Boston Globe newspaper article about the
publication of the book, the Globe explained that a
"girl" in the production department at Little Brown,
messed up & single handedly caused the book to be
published without the dedication page. At least
100,000 copies were bound this way until Salinger
himself found out about the error which he insisted be
corrected, to which end, Little Brown tipped-in the
dedication page in two separate positions; incorrectly
before the half-title, know as the second state &
correctly after the title-page which is considered the
third state of the book. For some time it was thought
that only about 20 or so copies escaped into the
market without the dedication page, but this state,
considered the first, appears with some regularity &
it would be safe to say that there are quite a few
more copies of this supposed first state about. We say
supposed "first state" because the production
department copy offered here has an integral
dedication page which is the way the book should have
been made up to begin with. It would appear that this
copy is arguably actually the True First State of the
book - perhaps it should be called the First True
Intended State, or the First True Pre-Production State
- & the currently regarded first state without the
dedication page should be called the First available
First State after the single known Pre-Production
First State Copy. Are we confused? In any case, this
is a unique Salinger - certainly important enough to
make a fuss about as it clearly indicated the
Publisher's intended make-up of the book. Little
Brown's file copy. Glued to the rear free-endpaper is
a printed notice stating: SAMPLE Return to
Manufacturing Department LITTLE BROWN AND COMPANY
Published: 1/28,63 Cloth: GSB Silver Black Word Count;
54,225. Four typographical errors in the text have
been corrected by an editor/proof reader in green
pencil [probably intended for a later printing]; the
verso of the front free-endpaper lists the pages on
which there are typographical errors & corrections.
Obviously a significant & unique item, which provides
unique bibliographical information. A very good
example, with some fading to spine, light edgewear to
cloth-covered boards, & soiling to the top edge & with
glue remains on the rear pastedown to which was pasted
a copy of the book's original dustwrapper since lost
in time & space. A fascinating copy In a very good
