I've read a great deal of Balzac in translation and my french friends
think I miss little...but they are french and hate Blazac the way
american's hate Hawthorne...interestingly, Salinger has been widely
translated--I've seen articles and disserations on Salinger in German and
Japanese, and suspect his international reputation is quite strong. will
