Ive often wondered the same thing, and I'm beginning to think that there may
be some differences, though quite technical in my opinion. I did a little
project on the idea of the holy moment this year in my english class.
Epiphanies seem to be more "ego" centered. They revolve around information
or revelations that affect the person individually. A "life-changing"
event. The boy in the end of Joyce's "Araby" definitely had an epiphany.
Holy moments, as I take them to be, seem to be more general, and quite often
less ego-centered. Could we say that the person even "forgets" his self in
that moment? Holy moments dont always seem to be "life-changing" events
either. Some characters just seem to be predisposed to such moments and
their lives are full of them. It doesnt seem that new information is always
imparted. Seymour's life could be said to have been full of divine moments.
I just don't know if I like the idea of calling all such moments
epiphanies. Sorry for the overall sloppiness of thought. Let me know what
you all think. Nobody in my class bothered to ask questions or debate, so
please give all your thoughts on this. I need it...
