Hi! I didn't write the instructions (unless they were lifted verbatim
from those I did write, which follow below), but shall try to have
them fixed or remedied, depending on the situation. Can you say where
you found the instructions? Also, if you have a copy of both:

        * one of the errors
        * the successful response

and can mail them to me privately at:

        tim@roughdraft.org

... I would be infinitely grateful! Thanks!

This unsuccessful reply is what I really want, since I get copies of
all mail that goes to or is generated by the list, and I haven't seen
any such messages related to you. Yet, you are the second person in
the last few days to make an observation about having problems either
joining or quitting the list, so I'd like to figure out what the problem
is, and solve it. (It's especially vexing because people have been
coming and going recently as frequently as if this were the lobby of the
dining hall at Pencey Prep.)

Thanks for any help you can offer in helping achieve this goal!

This is very peculiar, since the software actually picks out your
email address from the header of your mail and (ssh, big secret)
ignores any "full name" you might enter!

In fact, in my own canned instructions (below) AND also listed on the
www.roughdraft.org web site (which is the home of this mailing list),
there is nothing at all about adding anything after entering the
"subscribe bananafish" command.

Therefore, if you still have any or all of these errors on hand and
can send them to me privately (NOT TO THE LIST) at:

        tim@roughdraft.org

... I would be much obliged. They are:

        * copies you kept of any of your outgoing messages
          (those that failed AND/OR those that succeeded)
        * copies of errors you got back from the list
        * copies of successful messages you got back from the list

I'm monomaniacal about getting to the root of errors that come along
from time to time!

Also, to repeat that earlier request, I'd appreciate getting the URL
you read that contained instructions on how to join. I will contact
the owner of salinger.org and ask to have any errors fixed.

Thanks for discovering the difficulties and for reporting them.

P.S. Oh -- and welcome to the list! <grin>

P.P.S. These are the canned instructions I give out to people
who want or need 'em:

To join the bananafish mailing list, please send mail to:

        majordomo@roughdraft.org

You can (optionally) leave the subject line blank if your mail
software allows that. (Some mail software will not permit blank
subject lines, so enter anything you want, because we ignore the
subject line for subscription requests.)

In the body of the message, enter one single line:

        subscribe bananafish

-
* Unsubscribing? Mail majordomo@roughdraft.org with the message
* UNSUBSCRIBE BANANAFISH
