Will, Josh and Cheryl, thanks for your responses.

Maybe my assumption that Salinger's characters could only be
derived from real life examples (within or outside the author himself)
was just caused by disbelief that it would be possible to create such
characters. We don't know, so Josh's genius theory could well be
true. I'm glad I posted my initial post, because I've learned from it.
And I may start reading Dostoyevski.

Still, doesn't "my" theory offer a nice explanation for the trouble that
Salinger takes to tell us that For Esme...'s author is not Sergeant X,
but *is* in fact present in the scene? Or do you think that this is just
some mannerism, or a way to make fun of people like me who try to
find aspects of the author in his stories...
