I live in New York and see the fake ID stores all the time, and last
year when Paul Kennedy and I rampaged through Times Square in memory
of Emma Goldman, I tried to buy an underage ID so that I'd get
rejected all over the place (the way writers are obliged to do) and
feel young and full of vim, vigor, and the sound and the fury.

But they turned me down on account of the millions of white hairs
growing out the sides of my head. So, now I can't claim to be sixteen,
and have had to park my coming-of-age angst elsewhere.

Life is so unfair. Paul didn't even rise to my defense (defence!) and
denounce me as a teenager, to lend the tale some credibility....
