Scottie, I didn't have only you in mind when I wrote that, though of
course I certainly gave some thought to your "tough love" approach to
people. But I tried to be more universal in referring to the kinds of
sometimes-discouraging reception that might greet newcomers.

I'm all for it ... I'll be the one sitting at the far end of the room,
though, from the smoke of those ropy things, the appeal of which I've
never been able to grasp.

Now, there's an idea I hadn't thought of. Three cheers for the
great-grandfather! I never would have guessed it. I'm glad you still
countenance the folly of the younger ones among us as we parade past
your windows -- or should I say "your office door"? Whatever we call
it, I'm glad you've decided in past incidents to stay here, when you
might easily have decided to take your business elsewhere. I'd prefer
always to have your coolly calculating eye in the audience. It helps
keep the rest of us on our toes.

I've always appreciated your pulpit, even when you've taken aim squarely
at me and scored a direct hit, when you've disagreed with me.

I had hoped to avoid sentimentality and mawkishness in my thoughts
about fathers and "offspring-hood," and I appreciate the kind words
some people have thrown my way. Thanks to all for continuing to make
this feel like a community.
