a classical haiku is three lines consisting of

5 7 5 syllables.

according to that old high-handed poem himself, r. h.
blyth of footnote fame, the haiku also intimates the
season of the year.

seymour's final (death) poem is written on the blotter
of the hotel desk, in japanese. (there is a strong
tradition of japanese poems writing a final poem
shortly before they die.)
