Yes, on the face of things I would think that either 'to spread' or 'to
stretch' is closer to 's'épandre' than 'to melt.' But I was faced with the
night and a cat doing this. The night spreads / Kitty spreads ? The night
stretches / Kitty stretches ? Melting is less accurate but seems to me a
better fit. We could translate each instance with a different word -- one
better suited to nights and the other to cats -- but the consistency seemed
too important, so the translator lies. Traitorous bastards, you know.
