Speaking of Pop, U2 has a fairly nice sized critque of all things pop
going these days. I've seen two live shows (The Las Vegas premier, Los
Angeles last weekend) and it seems to me that they've still got a tight
hold on the "the worlds best r & r band" moniker, if youre interested in
that sort of stuff.

More importantly, this album is dedicated to the farse, phonyness if you
will, of pop culture, commercialism and other western (mostly american)
mores. In the albums fulcrum song, "Playboy Mansion" (musically my
favorite and the only one that aren't performing on tour, big bemoanment
here) Bono posses the musical question, "if coke is a mystery/michael
jackson history/if beauty is truth/and surgury the fountain of
youth/what do I have to do...to get into the gates of that (playboy)
mansion.... (fading) then will there be now time of sorrow, then will
there be no time of shame, (repeat)"

The album is good (not as good as Achtung) and highly spiritual and
seems to tap into some Holdenesque angst, 1997 style.

cheers,

Josh
