Hi Helena. Are you still in the throes of the Leaving cert?
Don't worry: I read somewhere that the Irish education system came 2nd
in the world in some survey. God knows how they measure these things.
Of course it's not much use to you in Ireland, because everyone else
has got just as good an education. You have to head over to some other
country that came 217th in the survey where the schools don't teach
maths or reading or something crucial like that; then you'll shine...

Anyway I second Tom Robbins. There you go - are you happy now?
Actually, I've just started Still Life With Woodpecker thanks to
your recommendation. It was in the middle of this pile of books-to-be-read
and I was just finished a maths book, and had a bad taste in my mouth,
so it looked like a pleasant alternative. I'll reserve judgement on it
for the moment. Actually, I have no recollection buying it - but there's
an Oxfam 99p sticker on it, so I guess I bought it there. Great place
Oxfam; I've procured at least one third of my books there for an average
price of one punt. Sometimes you get these little notes in the margin
or the scent of long-faded perfume and it gives the book a little more
life. (Or course, you wouldn't put the thing anywhere NEAR your pillow)

I think Milan Kundera is great... can't think of a single reason
why now, but I'm sure it'll come back to me.
