I know I brought this up, but I have just thought of something else. Zooey,
for one, was somewhat angry at Buddy and Seymour for bringing up and educating
himself and Franny. He knew, as a kid, that he was smart. There are
intelligent and quiet kids, and there are intelligent and arrogant kids. He
was, in my opinion, intelligent but arrogant, which he had some right to be
considering he was second to last in the family of prodigies, was on the radio
show, and constantly received a what-to-do-with-life talk from his older
siblings. Also, as I think Tim pointed out, his parents considered him
somewhat equal to themselves, all progressing together etc., which is what
made him think he could consider them equal to himself as well. I know parents
and kids who are best friends, mostly one kid in the family, but there is a
difference between considering each other equal as friends, and considering
each other equal on the level of calling each other "stupid" as Zooey did his
mother. It would have been nice to see in further mother-children dialogue if
any of the other kids would have been more respectful.
