I always found it both interesting and telling that Salinger wrote in his school newspaper's entertainment column that he (metaphorically, I hope) `throws stones at small children who resemble Shirley Temple'. Given that Shirley always played such an Esme-esque role; always the knowing, precocious orphan who breaks down the defences of anyone around her. The movies of her later career even strike me as somehow reminiscent of that shady `grown up' Esme we encounter in silhouette at the beginning of the story beckoning Sergeant X to come to her wedding. Was `For Esme' written as a reaction against the sort of squeaky sentimentality such films evinced? Is it actually in part a subscription to the mode? Either way, Shirley Temple and JDS make a pretty interesting juxtaposition.

And for the record, parts of me say very loudly that Patti Smith, much as I love her, is as big a phony as Debbie Harry ever was - possibly or even probably more. And `Rapture' is one of the best songs ever.
