Hi Kate:)
Your story reminded me so much (and probably others
were like this too) of the first time I read Salinger.
I'm only 19, but I'm already starting to feel old and
I think Salinger is one of those authors that have
that effect on people. My older cousin was the one who
introduced me to Salinger, when I was a freshman, and
I have to say very few authors(James Baldwin, Malcolm
X, F. Scott Fitzgerald, etc...) have had the similar
effect on my life as he has. Your comment that you
were one of the few in the class made me laugh,
because that's sort of the special thing about
Salinger I think. Even though he probably has millions
of fans around the world, it always feels like he's
yours and no one else's. Like Holden Caulfield said,
he's one of those authors you wish you was your best
friend and that you could call him up on the phone
after reading his books. Yes, I've stayed up all hours
of the nite reading and re-reading his stories too. I
can't really remember the exact order they "fell into
my lap", but I know it was "Catcher" and then I think
"Franny and Zooey", "9 Stories" and then "RHTRBC". I
think, aside from "Catcher", that "Franny and Zooey"
is my favorite. After reading all his stories (not
counting all the little obscure hard-to-find-ones), I
think I went through a sort of depression because
there was nothing left of his left to read, lol.

Anyway, I was wondering about a few things:(for
everyone else on this list):

1) Who first introduced you to Salinger (or did you
discover him on your own)?

2) How old were you and what was the first one you
read?

3) If you have kids, what age do you think is a good
age to pass on these stories to them?

:)
