Just to make it easier to follow, I quote charlotte quoting myself:

and then the lady herself:

Dear charlotte,
I do not think any apology is called for, as I believe that
the imprecise nature of my witticism left it open to whatever
interpretation, if any, you would find most humorous[footnote 1].
Unless, of course, you are apologizing for not calling me Mattis,
reducing me to a common noun.
As for what the glyph (: signifies, that also depends on the interpretation
of its deliberately ambiguous placement. If you understand it as my own
addition, sort of laughing at my own joke, then it is an austral smiley (sp?).
Whereas if it is to be interpreted as part of my suggested correction,
then it is an austral smiley (:
all the best,
Mattis
[1] it is really not worth explaining what I meant with this silly
joke, but I would rather look foolish than appear to be making a joke at
charlotte's expense (I would even rather appear too American and
oversensitive, but's that's how it is, even if I am not as nice as I pretend).
All I meant was that to me it made more sense that the complaint use the
once derogatory "guys", whereas one would presumably apologize to real
"men", whose behavior would be not be in question.
