When I picked up The Sound and the Fury a little while ago (and I'm pretty
much self-educated, can't spell worth a damn, nearly flunked out of high
school, got stoned and drunk in hopes of escaping teen angst, etc) and
read the first hundred pages I had to put it down and think for a while.
That was the most beautiful piece of writing I'd ever read. It took my
breath away. And I don't think that was simply because it was new to its
time. I think it was just plain good work. When I read Mark Twain I am
in awe of his wit and wisdom. When I read Flannery O'Connor I cannot
believe someone of this insight actually walked the face of the earth. I'm
still restricting my heroes to America, by the way. Catcher in the Rye,
same thing. A novel so brilliant it transcends time.

So when you hear me worshipping these people and holding others still to a
test it is not so much out of disrespect for "generation x" but out of a
love for those people who truly deserve to be remembered.

I am sorry to you all for losing my temper. I am a bit of a hothead (got
it from my mother) and can dwell in the Pretentious Zone if not kept in
check. I hope I didn't make anyone leave or get disgusted at this list or
life in general. It is not my desire to leave dirty footprints.

Sasha
