Thanks for the post - I read and enjoyed every bit.

Regarding F&Z, I'm afraid I fall into a gray area neglected by your review.
I love the stories, but mainly because Salinger so perfectly captures the
dialect and mannerisms of Upper East Side Manhattan, much as he captured the
language of a NYC teenager in Catcher. Like Holden, Franny, and especially
Zooey charmed the pants off of me. They are a compelling, irresistible pair
of snobs.

Then there's the religious stuff. Perhaps I'm projecting something into the
story, but I detected in Zooey a distinct rebellion against all of the piety
and holiness surrounding Seymour. Zooey's too sharp, too narcissistic to be
caught by the trap that holds Franny, and that Salinger himself stumbled
into with Teddy and S:AI. Jesus would never have worshiped Jesus.
