Mr. A. is the only character in the novel that shows any real affection for
Holden. A homosexual pass? Nah, I've always felt that because of Holden's
lack of experience­that is, an unloved child­he is unable to see Mr. A's
behaviour as anything but a rather forward gesture when he wakes. This
incident comes at the height of the novel and seems (to me) to reflect just
how lost and alone he really is.

Off Liz for the moment. Stuck on Midnight Oil's Breathe.

Saw that bit on JDS and reclusive authors in Entertainment Weekly or
something the other day. God, he *really* is an old man. I was hoping he
might be a vampire.
