It is a poem by Rumi, a philosopher/poet in the early 13th century. The story is five men going in to a dark room, one-by-one to see the elephant. If memory serves, I believe that they were considering buying it, but couldn't agree what type of animal they were buying. This is just a footnote, but I thought it was interesting.
