    That should, of course, read: 'no longer the broad's 
    couch-scent & island ...'

    This is a perfectly straightforward allusion to 
    old Latin usage 'insula Veneris' - which requires,
    I presume, no further explanation.

    Incidentally, why did no one tell me that that
    kinky old dauber Balthus was the sometime 
    stepson of the great man?
