I'd agree with you on that one. (It's either Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn.) And
I think the point is that they're all liars, no? Gatsby, Huck, Tom, Holden,
Buddy... All liars who we love, but liars nonetheless.

The D.B./Gatsby connection, I always thought, is Holden's way of calling
even D.B. a phony, but a phony that he loves, just as Nick dearly loved Jay
Gatsby. D.B., who went off to Hollywood to write for money, rather than
continue writing his excellent stories about goldfish. Holden sees him
pretty clearly, but maybe doesn't want to be so quick to condemn him, as he
does everyone else.

I'm not very familiar (read: not at all) with Ring Lardner's work. Does
this fit?
